From the Greek Ικαρος (Ikaros), of unknown meaning. In Greek myth Icarus was the son of Daedalus, locked with his father inside the Labyrinth by Minos. They escaped from the maze using wings devised from wax, but Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax melted, plunging him to his death.

The Icarus analogy of “flying too close to the sun” has been applied to
1. A Man with a type A personality who does not recognize his own limitations
which is attributed to an internalisation of the father-son rivalry.
2. A constellation of mental conflicts , the degree of which reflects the inbalance  between a persons desire for success, achievement , or material goods, and the ability to achieve  those goals; the greater the gap between the idealized goal and reality , the greater the likelihood of failure.

Icarus Complex

form of overcompensation wherein an individual, due to feelings of inferiority, formulates grandiose aspirations for future achievement despite lacking propertalent, experience, and/or personal connections. Such a person often exhibits elitism fueled by hubris and detachment from social reality.

The Icarus complex is a term in psychoanalysis and personality theory first used by Henry A. Murray to describe a particular type of over-ambitious character. Psychosynthesis has applied it to those in whom spiritual ambition exceeds their personality limits, leading to a backlash

Verb. When a person does something with such intensity it results in spectacular failure.

The moral of this myth could be also linked to Plato´s analogy of the divided line, in which the Sun symbolizes the highest Form (Idea of God). Therefore according to this perspective, Icarus has flown too high . He tried to become wiser than Gods whilst achieving Knowledge and, as he defied the godess,  he was punished for that reason.
